IT ALL STARTED on Wednesday when Nicole Froio – a PhD student in the UK - posted a single tweet asking women a question:
What is the most obvious thing a man has ever mansplained to them?
All people had to do was quote the tweet and tell their own story.
Nicole probably didn’t expect it to take off like it did.
She’s got hundreds and hundreds of responses over the last few days, and they would make you weep
The thread quickly took over Twitter – gaining global coverage in The Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, Teen Vogue, The Daily Mail and beyond.
Of course, mansplain was officially added to the Oxford dictionary in 2014, so its definition has been established for quite some time now:
But Nicole’s thread gave us countless examples of people’s personal real-life anecdotes – and some of them are beyond ridiculous
Instances that were shared went viral in their own right, such was the absurdity of the mansplaining in question
NASA astrophysicists joined in
From the bizarre to the infuriating, they kept coming
All the facepalms in the world won’t suffice
Froio wrote on Twitter yesterday that she “had no idea it would get so much attention.”
And it’s probably only just starting.
